The Brief

Showcase the wonderful landscapes and seascapes created by local artist, Michael Preston, in addition to his new line in vanity mirrors. The site is to replace a previous, static site that had not been updated for some time and was not actively attracting any buyers.

The Strategy

Rather than just be an online gallery of Michael’s paintings, it was agreed that the site should allow people to purchase Michael’s art, as this would cater for impulse buyers. Paypal was identified as the preferred payment mechanism. Michael was also keen to be able to manage the addition of new items to the website himself.

The site also needed some additional features:

  • Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) facilities
  • Integration with Facebook

The Result

The project started off with an unusual challenge, as the current domain registrar appeared to have stopped trading without releasing the domain. However, Four Lakes was able to help Michael regain control of his domain through Nominet, and work on the site started.

Working to a tight deadline, Four Lakes completed the following work in less than a month:

  • Transfer domain to Four Lakes control
  • Set up web hosting and install WordPress
  • Identify a number of WordPress eCommerce themes and help Michael choose the most appropriate
  • Install the chosen theme, and tweak the design to match Michael’s needs
  • Set up and test the payment gateways, shipping options and other eCommerce specific functions
  • Create and integrate the new Rye Art & Design Facebook page
  • Carry out training with Michael to ensure he is able to manage day-to-day tasks

The website was created on time and to budget, and Michael is now trading his art online.
